Rare WWII photos to be unveiled at Silent Wings Museum

Lubbock’s Silent Wings Museum will commemorate the 66th anniversary of D-Day in World War II with a two-day event this weekend. The event Saturday and Sunday honors the sacrifice made by Allied forces on the shores of Normandy, France during a critical period of the war in Europe. Highlighting the weekend will be an official unveiling of a collection of rare World War II photographs by Lubbock resident Fritz Jakobsmeier. He served in Germany’s air force, the Luftwaffe, as a photographer and war correspondent in Sicily, Africa, Germany and France. The unveiling will be at 1 p.m. Saturday during a public reception. Museum hours for the D-Day commemoration will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
