Should A Presidential Candidate Have Experience In An Elected Position Before Running For President?

The constitution does not require that a president have previous experience in an elected position, and in fact some presidents, Dwight Eisenhower for example, had no such experience.

Republican Herman Cain, who has experience as a business executive and talk show host, hopes to repeat Eisenhower’s achievement in 2012.  On KFYO, Congressman Randy Neugebauer was asked if a president needs to have experience in an elected position before becoming president.

“I don’t necessarily think that’s a requirement,” Neugebauer said.  “What we need is a fresh look at how we govern.  I think a candidate like Herman Cain brings a fresh perspective to government.”

Neugebauer has not endorsed Cain or any other candidate at this point.
