The Motley County Attorney is threatening action against the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for detonations that that touched off a 150-acre fire in the county this week. The ATF has taken responsibility but Motley County Attorney Tom Edwards says what the bureau was doing in the midst of a fire season is inexcusable. Several ranchers near Flomot were affected by the fire, which was brought under control after about six hours. The ATF say the acreage where the fire occurred is leased for research by Texas Tech and Homeland Security and is used as an exercise area for bomb squads. The County Attorney says the ATF could be charged with a Class C Misdemeanor for violating Motley County’s burn ban.
