President Barack Obama has rejected requests by Texas U.S. Senators Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn to rethink his administration’s decision not to declare Texas a disaster area. Governor Rick Perry has expressed dismay at the Obama administration’s negative position on the issue. A disaster declaration would open the way to federal aid for Texas. Some see Obama’s stand as a political act against Texas. Yesterday, Midland Republican congressman Mike Conaway said he is “deeply troubled” by the federal government’s decision not to declare virtually all of Texas as a major disaster area. Conaway says the decision by the Federal Emergency Management Agency will add pressure on the cash-strapped state to aid residents and local agencies.
