Wildfires continue to plague the South Plains, especially in Scurry County which has had at least 4,000 acres burned so far. U.S. Highway 84 has had to be closed three times in recent weeks because of reduced visibility due to smoke. Yesterday firefighters struggled to contain a fire about 15 to 20 miles northwest of Snyder. Texas Forest Service reported the Scurry County fire was about 75% contained yesterday morning but afternoon winds continued fanning the flames. At one point six residences were threatened by the fire but firefighters kept the flames back. Another grass fire also brought firefighters into action yesterday in Hale County just northwest of Petersburg. Down near Odessa, at least two homes were burned in wildfires that forced evacuations from the small town of Pleasant Farms, about 12 miles south of Odessa.
