Across the state wildfires scorched nearly 400 square miles. Flames in Midland County destroyed about 34 homes. In Far West Texas, 40 homes were burned at Fort Davis. The flames spread over more than 60,000 acres in Jeff Davis County, narrowing missing the historic old Army cavalry fort build in 1854. Also spared was the McDonald Observatory. The observatory, one of the world’s leading astronomical research facilities, was pressed into service as an evacuation shelter.
