Garza County officials report that a huge wildfire west of Justiceburg was put out around 5:30 this morning. The blaze began spreading yesterday over 5,000 acres near Post, threatening 20 homes and 400 RVs in the Lake Alan Henry area and forcing the closing of U.S. Highway 84. The Santa Fe Rail line in the area suffered burned cross ties and the line is closed. Firefighting efforts were complicated by high winds accompanying a cold front moving through the region. At Odessa, a 2,500-acre grass fire threatened homes and a water treatment plant. And in New Mexico, four homes and several barns were burned at Ruidoso by a grass fire that forced the evacuation of Ruidoso Downs Racetrack and Casino and nearby neighborhoods. A stretch of U.S. 70 on the eastern edge of Ruidoso Downs was closed when flames jumped the highway.
