Threat Of Wildfires Becomes Extreme This Afternoon

An extreme threat of grassland fires is expected to develop across the South Plains and Panhandle this afternoon. That does include Lubbock as well as Lamb, Dickens, Terry counties and others in the area. A Red Flag Warning will be in effect from noon to 9 p.m. Sustained winds of 30 miles an hour with gusts exceeding 40 miles an hour will combine with low relative humidity to create critical fire weather conditions. Yesterday tThe Lubbock County Commissioners Court extended the county-wide burn ban for another 90 days. The current Lubbock County burn ban was enacted just after last Christmas.
