Texas Tech Official Outlines Plans for New Residence and Dining Hall

At Wednesday morning’s Lubbock City Council meeting, a Texas Tech official outlined plans for a new residence hall to begin within the next few months, to help house students as the university grows to their goal of 40,000 students by 2020. Tech Vice Chancellor of Facilities, Planning, and Construction Michael Molina said this morning that the new dorm and dining hall would house 513 students, and the area is designed for the possible construction of a new multi-story parking structure nearby. The Texas Tech Board of Regents approved the project at a meeting in late January.

The university plans to raze the Sports Studies Center building to make way for the new dorm complex at 18th and Boston Avenue beginning in April. This also comes at the same time as a new campus chapel will be constructed not far from the site near 19th and University. Molina said the expected completion date for the new $45 million residence and dining hall project is at the end of June 2012. So far, Tech has not requested any financial assistance from the City of Lubbock for this project.
