High Numbers of Students Absent at Monterey High Following Rumors of Widespread Altercations

A large number of the student body at Monterey High School today left the campus following text messages between parents and students, as well as posts on social networking sites led to rumors of an altercation. A trusted anonymous source at Monterey High said that there were at least two altercations in the cafeteria at the school today, and between five and eight arrests after school yesterday due to fights between students.

Our source says that they believe a lack of discipline at the central Lubbock school over the past few semesters has been the cause of the increased student altercations.

In a statement released just after 1:45 this afternoon, Lubbock ISD stated that no district campuses were placed on lockdown, no serious incidents have occurred today, and the threat of large fights and other student violence are mere rumor. As a precautionary measure, there was an increased police presence this afternoon at Monterey and Coronado High Schools.
