Jermar McKinzie - Mugshot from 2010 Arrest

Lubbock police responded to a domestic disturbance call in the 5200 block of Kenosha Avenue around 4:30 Sunday morning, following a 911 call in which the operator could hear the situation turn violent.

20-year-old Zitra Rivera called police at 4:24 a.m. Sunday during a domestic disturbance with her boyfriend, 25-year-old Jermar Antwan McKinzie.

Responding Officer Jennifer Breazeale and Sergeant Michael Jordan heard the yelling and screaming as they arrived at apartment 31 at the Kenosha Court Apartments.

As Officer Breazeale approached the doorway, she saw McKinzie standing over Rivera holding a knife. Breazeale ordered McKinzie to drop the knife and he refused. The officer fired two rounds, both hitting McKinzie. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Rivera was taken to University Medical Center for treatment after the assault. Officer Breazeale, who has been on the force for over four years, has been placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated, as is the LPD’s standard procedure.
