Winter Weather Update and Warnings

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for much of the South Plains and Panhandle through tomorrow evening.  One to four inches of snow is expected across the South Plains with snowfall totals in the Panhandle reaching up to five inches.  Blowing snow and the potential for the buildup of ice is expected to create hazardous driving conditions over the course of tonight and tomorrow.  Wind Chill values will be at about 0 across the South Plains, with the Panhandle having wind chill values tonight as low as 25 degrees below zero and getting colder to -35 Tuesday evening.  Also, a Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the southern counties of the South Plains, Permian Basin and Eastern New Mexico.

City of Lubbock street crews are preparing for the expected wintry blast. The city recommends that drivers should allow extra time to get to your destination, drive cautiously, and avoid abrupt actions like suddenly braking, steering, or accelerating, which also means leaving plenty of room to stop between yourself and the car ahead. For homes, it is recommended that indoor faucets should be allowed to drip and ensure that sprinkler and irrigation systems are completely turned off.

All Lubbock ISD outdoor athletic events scheduled for Tuesday have been canceled due to the expected low temperatures.
