One man seriously wounded in ‘Wild West’ shootout in downtown Amarillo

A man was seriously wounded during a shootout in downtown Amarillo yesterday involving four police officers and at least one gunman. One officer told the Amarillo Globe News it was like a scene out of the “Old West,” with bullets flying as early morning party goers emerged screaming onto South Polk Street less than 100 feet from the recently opened Courtyard by Marriott at the Historic Fisk Hotel. Police opened fire on a Chevy Tahoe shortly after 2 a.m. when the driver backed the SUV onto South Polk Street, then drove toward them, refusing to heed their demands to stop. Police said at least one gunman fired shots at the SUV in the parking lot before it backed away. The driver, identified only as a 24-year-old Hispanic man, was shot a number of times. Another 24-year-old Hispanic in the SUV suffered a gunshot wound in the arm. The Globe News said it was unclear whether police or another gunman fired the shots that hit the two men. Authorities used a taser stun gun to arrested 27-year-old Michael Manyoun on charges of aggravated assault and evading arrest. His exact role in the melee was not known.
