Drought conditions not bad enough to halt fireworks sales

Despite drought conditions on the South Plains, Lubbock County has no plans to ban fireworks sales for the holiday season.  County Commissioner Mark Heinrich says fireworks will go on sale as scheduled between December 20th and December 31st.  Officials have been watching what is known as the  Keetch-Byram Drought Index, or KBDI, which determines the chances of brush fires. If the KBDI is at or above the number 575, a burn ban is required in Lubbock County. The  county’s KBDI is currently well below that, at 399.  Heinrich says people nevertheless should be cautious  with their fireworks celebrations.
