Martin: We Celebrate Christmas, Not Happy Holidays

“We don’t have Happy Holidays, we have Christmas.”

That’s Mayor Tom Martin on Lubbock’s First News on KFYO, responding to a question about the city’s policy regarding observing Christmas.

It seems that about this time every year, there are news stories about government entities in other parts of the county that have voluntarily or involuntarily stopped observing Christmas.  That hasn’t happened in Lubbock.

“We have Christmas decorations all over city hall,” Martin said.  “We had the First Methodist Church choir at the council meeting on Wednesday and they sang Christmas carols, and we still pray at council meetings.  That’s our policy.”

Martin said he hasn’t heard of any complaints.

“We don’t intend changing our policy,” Martin said.
