Risks of more wildfires lessen with diminishing winds

Some areas of the South Plains may be in for some snow tonight and tomorrow. The National Weather Service says an inch or two of snow is possible by tomorrow afternoon along a line from Muleshoe to Plainview to Quitaque. Little or no snow accumulation is expected elsewhere on the South Plains. The prospect of moisture as well as diminishing winds lessens chances for the kind of wildfires that swept over several thousands of acres in two counties yesterday. Firefighters spent hours yesterday controlling a 2600-acre Hartzel Range Fire in Floyd County.  Units from Lockney, Floydada, Dougherty, Paul’s Volunteer Fire Departments and three Floyd County Maintainers were involved. No homes were threatened in that fire. But in Lamb County a ahlf-dozen homes were threatened by a 1600-acre fire located at County Road 75  about 15 miles north of Earth. Responding to that blaze were fire departments from Muleshoe, Sudan, Springlake, Earth and Lazbuddie.
