The High Plains water district plans annual check of ground-to-water levels

High Plains Underground Water Conservation District No. 1 plans to begin as early as today making ground-to-water measurements in its network of 1,200 privately-owned observation wells over the Ogallala Aquifer. The measurements are taken annually to determine the effect of the year’s  pumpage on the aquifer’s groundwater levels. Observation wells are spaced about one well per nine square miles throughout the High Plains Underground Water Conservation District.  District Manager Jim Conkwright says the district will also be contacting landowners to establish other observation well locations in newly-annexed portions of the district. Those annexed areas include the northwest quadrant of Hockley County, the southwest quadrant of Lamb County, and all of Swisher County.
