A new book describes two decades of Lubbock’s Cowboy Symposium

A new book is out that describes two decades of a colorful event which each year brings thousands of  people to Lubbock to indulge in all manner of cowboy things: western poetry, chuck wagon cooking, cowboy history, music and more. The book is the first published history of the National Cowboy Symposium and Celebration, which was started in 1989 by Alvin G. Davis and others interested in preserving and commemorating western cowboy culture. The book is by professor and author Dr. Richard Slatta, who has written several books including The Cowboy Encyclopedia, which is regarded as a reference on cowboy history. The book on the national Cowboy Symposium and Celebration contains interviews and quotes, more than 200 pictures from over the years and a listing of American Cowboy Culture Award winners since 1989. For information about the book, call the symposium and celebration office at 806 798-7825…or go online to the organization’s website, www.cowboy.org.
