Cause sought in fatal highway crash near Lamesa

State troopers have been trying to determine the cause of a two-vehicle collision that killed a 55-year-old Welch woman and critically injured the 24-year-old driver of the other vehicle. Carmelita Vela Gaitan died Saturday morning when her Honda Civic was hit head-on by a Chevrolet pickup driven by 24-year-old Tanner Ray Osborn of Levelland. He was transported to a Lamesa hospital and later airlifted to University Medical Center in Lubbock. DPS said Osborn’s pickup had gone into Gaitan’s lane on State Highway 137 about three miles north of Lamesa. Both drivers were travelling alone.
