Wanted Man Shoots at Officer – Charged with Attempted Capital Murder

A man that shot at a Lubbock police officer this morning has been charged with Attempted Capital Murder.

The officer attempted to serve a warrant in the 300 block of 54th Street, and was greeted with gunfire.

Officer Gerardo Torres shot 27 year-old Jose Juan Ortega II in the torso during the incident, which occurred around 3:30 this morning.

Ortega was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in Hockley County, as well as a burglary charge, which was why the officers arrived where he was saying this morning.

Ortega is at University Medical Center. Officer Torres was treated at an area hospital, and then released.
