Former TTU HSC Professor Butler Part of Airport Scare

Former Texas Tech HSC Professor, Dr. Thomas Butler, is back in the national spotlight.

The 70 year-old Butler was detained overnight by authorities after a metal canister he was carrying set off an alarm at a security checkpoint at the Miami International Airport.  The AP reports that the during the security scare, the airport was evacuated.  However, neither explosives nor illegal materials were found.  Butler was released this morning.

Back in January 2003, Dr. Butler sparked a national bio-hazard scare when 30 vials containing bubonic plague samples went missing from his custody.

Butler was arrested on over 60 counts related to the missing samples and lying to authorities.  In December of 2003 he was convicted on 47 counts and spent two years in prison.
