Nearly Five-Hundred Inmates Now Being Held In New Lubbock Prison

Today, 495 inmates were moved into the new Lubbock Jail according to KMAC 28.

Officials say 500 more inmates still need to be moved to the jail. Construction began on the 400,000 square foot facility in August 2005.

The new facility can house almost twice as many inmates as the older Lubbock jail.

Because of the size of the facility, the county no longer has to pay to transfer inmates to jails outside of the county, which was costing about $3.2 million a year.
