Commemoration of Lubbock Tornado Takes Place Tuesday

Tomorrow is the 40th Anniversary of the Lubbock Tornado and the Guadalupe Neighborhood Association is holding a special event.  The Commemoration of the May 11, 1970 Lubbock Tornado will take place from 6 to 9pm at Guadalupe Park located at 1st Street and Avenue P.  Dignitaries and elected officials will be in attendance, including the Lubbock City Council and Mayor Tom Martin.  Mayor Martin will read a proclamation during the event and there will be free hot dogs and refreshments.  The Lubbock Tornado killed 26, injured over 1,500 and caused $200 million in damage. 

KFYO was the only Lubbock broadcast media outlet that provided news and emergency information during the tornado and the days after the devastation.  Considered the finest day in KFYO’s broadcasting history, the station was honored by President Richard Nixon for its service to the community.
